Shockwave Therapy
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a treatment technique that's used to effectively treat chronic heel pain, breaking down adhesions, reducing inflammation and promoting the body's natural healing process to help heal injuries and support regeneration of healthy new tissue. Shockwave therapy uses high pulses of ultrasonic energy to target only the affected tissues while leaving the surrounding tissues unharmed.
Is shockwave therapy only used to treat heel pain?
No, shockwave therapy has many applications in other areas of the body as well, including treatment of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and knee pain.
Will I need to be anesthetized during treatment?
No, shockwave therapy doesn't require either anesthesia or sedation, and it can be performed right in the office. You may experience some mild sensations due to the existing inflammation as the energy works to relieve strain and tension and promote circulation for faster healing.
What should I expect during treatment with shockwave therapy?
During treatment, you'll lie comfortably on the exam table, and a special handheld device will be gently pressed against your heel, releasing energy specifically to the target zone for greater effect. The duration of treatment will depend on your specific needs and symptoms.
How many treatments will I need to resolve my symptoms?
Some patients can achieve symptom relief in just a single visit, but most patients – and especially those with significant pain and discomfort – may need a series of treatments spaced a week apart to achieve optimal results. In most cases, maximum healing occurs within about two months. In between treatment sessions, you won't have any activity restrictions, so you'll be able to continue to perform your regular activities while you heal.
